AWT Sustainability
AWT works with a collaborative of professionals with a strong vision for sustainability by providing a suite of capabilities that address multiple facets of land development, land use planning, environmental sustainability, natural resources and renewable energy. For over 20 years, AWT has been assisting developers, general contractors, builders, realtors and property owners with projects associated with sustainability.

AWT Innovation & Water Management
One of AWT's main visions includes the innovation and preservation of water. AWT works individually with each client to determine goals and constraints. From there, AWT integrates innovation into each design that not only accomplishes the clients vision, but also preserves the environment and natural resources. AWT's services include:
> Stormwater Management
> Water Reuse
> Gray Water
> Low Impact Development
> Alternative BMPs
> Green Roofs

Stormwater Management
AWT has completed a significant amount of stormwater management projects. A belief that is strong by the professionals on staff includes the treatment of stormwater onsite, as opposed to offsite. Providing this service can assist in maintaining water quality and supply, eliminate actual pollution sources and also minimize other potential pollution sources.

Water Reuse
Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater for beneficial purposes such as agricultural and landscape irrigation, industrial processes, and toilet flushing. Recycled water is most commonly used for nonpotable (not for drinking) purposes, such as agriculture, landscape, public parks, and golf course irrigation. Other benefits include decreasing wastewater discharges and reducing and preventing pollution. Recycled water can also be used to create or enhance wetlands and riparian habitats.

Gray Water Management
Gray water is properly treated water used in the home/office, except water from the toilets. This water may be used for other purposes, such as landscape irrigation. There are many beneficial factors that include: lowering the amount of fresh water used, less strain on a failing septic system or treatment facility, requires less energy and is a great way of reclamation of otherwise wasted nutrients that work well for plant growth.

Redevelopment
Another passion of AWT's includes redevelopment, which can include Low Impact Development, Alternative BMPs for Stormwater Management, Green Roofs, etc.

Historic West Village
AWT demonstrated innovation in the design and implementation of sustainable stormwater management and water conservation for the historic West Village Expansion project in downtown Durham. The 9.4 acre mixed-use project exemplifies the opportunities in urban redevelopment to apply effective sustainable solutions to environmental needs. AWT provided the engineering and stormwater design services, which included the use of integrated BMPs for treating and recycling the stormwater. The system was also designed to provide a 40% reduction of nitrogen levels from predevelopment-to-postdevelopment and to treat up to a 1" storm, with all piping designed to handle the 10-year, 24-hour storm event. The finished product exemplifies how innovative BMPs can be integrated into the overall landscape plan.

Awarded the Gold Star Award by the Durham Soil and Water Conservation District in recognition of outstanding achievement in preserving Durham County's natural resources.
